British Columbia, Canada –
Leaving Quesnel
Today’s goal was to be a Redhead on the Yellowhead Highway. Since I was already awake in Quesnel after “the knock” I headed on to Prince George to explore the big city in Northern British Columbia and then see where I could bed down for the night.
Skipping Prince George, BC
Well Prince George was a dud honestly. It’s just so…. Packed in. The city isn’t crazy big but the population density is a bit insane, at least when I went through. There were a bunch of places I’d have liked to check out like the local rock climbing gym, a brewery, some nice restaurants, etc. All I really did while in town was grab gas, groceries (terrifying, oh my god SO many people at Real Canadian Superstore), and then find a winery out of town to bum wifi at (which was also a dud as it kept going out). Eventually with the lack of likely free overnight places, I just continued on my journey. Maybe another time Prince George.
Vanderhoof and Fraser Lake
Onward! I have become a Redhead on the Yellowhead Highway. I ended up in Vanderhoof but not really any place to stay there either. The Homestead Brew House was pretty good though. From there it was to Fraser Lake. I’d heard there was a municipal campground there that allowed free camping for two nights. Since I was arriving later on in the day though I was worried about there not being any spots, surely everyone wanted to park there! Nope! 11 spots with maybe 6 pull throughs. Wow it was great. Could still hear the train nearby occasionally but this wasn’t like a rest stop with highway noise nearby. Absolutely gorgeous. And that’s where I’ve been journaling from for some of the morning!

From there I will go on to Burns Lake, where they have more free municipal camping! Williams lake was a gem. Quesnel was okay. All these towns after Prince George have been amazing in their hospitality, if lacking in amenities slightly.
